Single shot weapons are better from far range, but that allows the other guy to spray the area with minigun, mininukes or some other heavy weapon. If you can get mid range toward enemy in power armor, then these things will pierce through the armor and drop the enemy quite fast. You will get it down much faster than with single shot weapons. These are extremely useful against beasts like Deathclaw and Behemot.
I am mostly using single shot weapons, but I think automatic weapons shouldn't be overlooked from their seemingly low damage.
